The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a variety of hard and soft tissue lasers for use in the dental treatment of adults and children.
The primary use of the hard tissue laser is to cut into bone and teeth with extreme precision. Hard tissue lasers are often used in the “prepping” or “shaping” of teeth for composite bonding, the removal of small amounts of tooth structure and the repair of certain worn down filling.
Hard tissue lasers have a wavelength that is highly absorbable by hydroxyapatite (calcium phosphate salt found in bone and teeth) and water, making them more effective for cutting through tooth structure.
PATIENT BENEFITS
NO ANESTHESIA: The best performing dental lasers can be used to perform almost all common cavity preparation procedures without the need for anesthesia. This eliminates the need for an injection, adverse reactions from anesthesia, and leaving our office with a “numb” feeling.
NO HIGH-SPEED DRILL: High-speed hand piece cavity preparation involves significant objectionable noise and vibration. The sound of a laser is not objectionable and no vibration is transmitted to the patient as the tip of the laser never even needs to contact the tooth!
