Do I Need Sedation During My Treatment?

There are a number of different reasons why we may recommend sedation during a dental procedure. Although it is not necessary for everyone, we may suggest it if you:

  • Have had a bad dental experience in the past
  • Experience mild to moderate anxiety concerning dental care
  • Require more extensive treatment, such as wisdom tooth removal or implants
  • Have a longer dental procedure scheduled
  • Have a child that is unable to sit calmly for necessary care

Different Options Offered for Your Needs

At Virgin Valley Dental, we offer two types of sedation dentistry to choose from:

Oral Prescription

By using prescription sedatives that are taken by mouth, we can ensure several hours of comfort for longer or more involved procedures. Although you will still remain partially conscious, most people feel as if they are taking a light nap or dreaming. It will be necessary to have someone escort you home, as the medication takes a bit of time to fully wear off.

Nitrous Oxide

We can easily implement it at any time, upon request – even during preventive cleanings or periodontal therapy. The effects are fully reversed within 5 to 10 minutes of inhaling 100% oxygen.

If you are considering sedation during your next treatment, please speak with one of our dentists. We will need to discuss your medical background, current medications being taken, and identify any potential risk factors that may pose as a contraindication. For most people, sedation dentistry is extremely safe. Call us today to find out more.
